Paithalmala

Paithalmala (Pi-thal-ma-la) is an enchanting hill station in North Kerala (India) in the Western Ghats near Kerala-Karnataka border. Standing as tall as about 4,500 feet (1372metres) above sea level, the summit is located about 65 kms north-east of Kannur (Canannore) city and 35 kms east of Thaliparamba. North of Paithalmala is the Kudaku forest.

The hill, which sprawls over an area of about 300 acres, has - like icing on a cake - picture-perfect meadows on its top. From this vantage point, one can have a panoramic view of the surroundings and the patches of forests nearby. The area is also a haven for a variety of flora and fauna, including rare varieties of trees, plants and butterflies. Hundreds of birds can also be sighted in this serene area.
The hill’s rather cool and salubrious climate, even during the summer season, has made it a popular destination.

The peak offers a spectacular view of the surrounding mountains beneath it. It is also a haven for a wide variety of rare flora and fauna. There are many seasonal waterfalls and brooks in the nearby areas. Paithalmala is an ideal spot for adventure tourism as well. There are not many such fascinating hill stations in the region. It is believed that the name 'Paithal' (meaning an infant) has connection with the 'Paithalkon' dynasty of Malabar.

Tourism development in Paithalmala is being taken up as a major scheme by Government of Kerala. The works include a suspension bridge for watching the seasonal waterfall, renovation of the watch tower, facilities for camping, trekking path and road widening. At the base of the mountain at Kudiyanmala, a tourist information center and dormitory have been constructed. The tourism development at Paithalmala is estimated at about 27 million Indian rupees.

തത്ത്വമസി

ഭാരതീയ ദർശനത്തിലെ പ്രഖ്യാതരചനകളായ ഉപനിഷത്തുകളിലൂടെയുള്ള ഒരു തീർഥയത്ര എന്നുവിശേഷിപ്പിക്കവുന്ന ഗ്രന്ഥമാണു തത്ത്വമസി. അഴിക്കോടിന്റെ ഏറ്റവും പ്രശസ്തമായ രചനയും ഇതുതന്നെ. കേരള സാഹിത്യ അക്കാദമി, കേന്ദ്രസാഹിത്യ അക്കാദമി, വയലാർ അവാർഡ്, രാജാജി അവാർഡ് തുടങ്ങി 12 അവാർഡുകൾ തത്ത്വമസിക്ക് ലഭിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.

സാമൂഹിക സാംസ്കാരിക പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ

സാമൂഹിക-സാംസ്കാരിക സ്ഥാപനമായ നവഭാരത വേദിയുടെ സ്ഥാപകനുംഅധ്യക്ഷനുമാണ് അഴിക്കോട്. ദീനബന്ധു, മലയാള ഹരിജൻ, ദേശമിത്രം, നവയുഗം, ദിനപ്രഭ, തുടങ്ങിയ പല പത്രങ്ങളിലും അഴിക്കോട്ജോലിചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ട്. 1993 മുതൽ 1996 വരെ നാഷണൽ ബുക് ട്രസ്റ്റ് ഓഫ്ഇന്ത്യയുടെ ചെയർമാനായിരുന്നു. ഇപ്പോൾ വർത്തമാനം തൃശ്ശൂരിനടുത്തുള്ള വിയ്യൂരിൽ താമസിക്കുന്നു. ഒരു വലിയപുസ്തകശേഖരത്തിന്റെ ഉടമയുമാണ് അദ്ദേഹം. എന്നദിനപത്രത്തിന്റെ പത്രാധിപരായി പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്നു. അവിവാഹിതനാണ്. ‍ ‍

Kalaripayattu

Kalaripayattu , is the ancient martial art of the Northern Kerala .Thalassery is the threshold of the Kalari Payattu. It is considered as the forerunner of Karate & Kung-fu. The Kalari is treated as the temple of learning. Age old traditions and customs are still practiced inside the Kalari religiously till today. The weapons used were the sword, Dagger, Shield, short sticks, spears etc. The co-ordination of the body and mind is given maximum importance in this art.

Kalarichikitsa is a special type Physiotherapic treatment for diseases as well as for toning up the body is given by the Gurukkal (Trainer) to the students.
The northern style is distinguished by its meippayattu - physical training and use of full-body oil massage. The purpose of medicinal oil massage is to increase the practitioners' flexibility, to treat muscle injuries incurred during practice, or when a patient has problems related to the bone tissue, the muscles, or nerve system. The term for such massages is thirumal and the massage specifically for physical flexibility chavutti thirumal which literally means "stamping massage" or "foot massage". The masseuse may use their feet and body weight to massage the person The system of treatment and massage, and the assumptions about practice are closely associated with ayurveda..

There are several lineages/styles (sampradayam), of which 'thulunadan' is considered as the best. In olden times, students went to thulunadu kalari's to overcome their defects (kuttam theerkkal). There are schools which teach more than one of these traditions. Some traditional kalari around Kannur for example teach a blend of arappukai, pillatanni, and katadanath styles.

KALARI

A Kalari is the school or training hall where martial arts are taught. They were originally constructed according to Vastu shastra with the entrance facing east and the main door situated on the centre-right. Sciences like mantra saastra, tantra saastra and marma saastra are utilized to balance the space's energy level. The training area comprises a puttara (seven tiered platform) in the south-west corner. The guardian deity (usually an avatar of Bhagavathi, Kali or Shiva) is located here, and is worshipped with flowers, incense and water before each training session which is preceded by a prayer. Northern styles are practiced in special roofed pits where the floor is 3.5 feet below the ground level and made of wet red clay meant to give a cushioning effect and prevent injury. The depth of the floor protects the practitioner from winds that could hamper body temperature. Southern styles are usually practiced in the open air or in an unroofed enclosure of palm branches. Traditionally, when a Kalari was closed down it would be made into a small shrine dedicated to the guardian deity.
