Kannavam waterfalls in Kannavam forest area is one of the intact nook in Kannur . The upcoming tourist spot is just 15 kms from Kuthuparamb Nedumpoyil road near "Changalagate" . 

The beautiful waterfall is bordered by a Colony which is inhabited by Kuruchyas . They belong to posterity of great "Thalakkal Chandu" .

It is an old pier extending out into the Arabian Sea. It is frequented by people taking evening walks. This "Kadalpalam" was used as a commercial access through the sea, to and from the Thalassery Bazaar, during the European rule. It is an old story now. At present it is in a deteriorating state. Now it can be preserved as a Tourist Centre.

It was in 1910 that the East India Company constructed the pier which extends to the Arabian Sea for transporting commodities to and from ships. The large rocks on the shore and shallow waters often led to shipwrecks and hence the pier was constructed, with huge cranes placed at its end and rail tracks on either side for easy transport of goods from the go downs situated at the shore.

A busy commercial centre then, Thalassery witnessed brisk development with its export of spices, coffee, fish, wood, and pepper, attracting people from all over.

The town became an administrative centre of operations and the judicial headquarters while the port stood a mute observer to the glory of the town and its development. It was the advent of the Mangalore port which reduced its significance principally, while many more aspects contributed to its slow degeneration. The ships disappeared, and gradually the cranes and the trolley tracks. Now it’s an evening spot for tourists.

The Sree Oorpazhachi Kavu temple has three main deities namely, Bhagavathy, Sree Oorpazhachi Daivathar and Kiratha sunu (Vettakkorumakan) within the inner courtyard (naalambalam), lending itself the rare significance of Shaiva - Vaishnava - Shaktheya sanctums within a single temple enclave. Apart from this, a shrine of Thondachan is present at the upper citadel (Mele Kottam). There are several legends associated with the temple at the deities.

Bhagavathy (Mother Goddess)
The deity of Bhagavathy represents Mother Goddess. The legend associated with the Bhagavathy at Sree Oorpazhachi Kavu is related to how Kali (the dark complexioned Goddess Parvathi) became Gauri (the fair complexioned Goddess parvathi).

Legend has it that once Lord Shiva repeatedly addressed Goddess Parvathi as Kali to an extent that she inferred it to be a taunt at her dark complexion. Feeling insulted, sad and angered she said, “Wounds from arrows can heal and axed trees can regrow during the rain but a heart broken by impolite words cannot be made”. After promising herself that she will rejoin her husband only after attaining a fair complexion, Goddess Parvathi departed her husband’s abode for Madhya adavi to perform penance. Standing single legged in between Shaabara trees, she performed hard meditative penance for a hundred years with the sole objective of attaining a fair complexion. Pleased with her penance, Lord Brahma granted her the colour of a lotus tendril (gaura varnam) and thenceforth became Gauri. It is to be remembered in this context that Sree Oorpazhachi Kavu till recent past was in possession of a nearby vast area of land called Malikaparambu (thought to be a corruption of the word Kalikaparambu or Kali’s land).

It is believed that performing swayamvara pushpanjali for the Bhagavathy brings about a good marital alliance.

Overbury's Folly

Overbury's Folly Thalassery ....!

Overbury's Folly is an unfinished construction and is generally regarded as an architectural folly,that now serves as a recreational park located in Thalassery.

 

 The name of the park is derived from E N Overbury who served his office as the Sub Collector of the region. With the aim of developing it into a picnic spot, he started the construction of this park in 1879. Unfortunately, he could not complete the construction and hence the spot was named ‘Overbury’s folly’. This park was renovated later, and now it serves as a major tourist attraction in Thalassery.

Its located on a hill adjacent to Thalassery Muncipal Stadium .

Andalurkavu is located at Andalur in Dharmadam village. It is the one of the prominent place in northern side of the Kerala.  It is one of the ancient temple dedicated to lord Rama who is in the form of Daivathar in this temple. The name Andalurkavu means the place where the holy weapons of the deities are kept. It can be divided as Andar-Villu-Oor Kavu. The chief deities of the temple are Lord Rama, hanuman and Lakshmana. Lord Shiva is also worshipped in this temple. According to myth it is believed that this temple is formed by Sree Parasurama who is the fifth living form of Vishnu.

Andalur kavu (also theyyam or theyaattam) is the main ritual of worship. Its one of the rare places where Yuddha kanda of Ramayana — the great epic — is visualised and performed. The main deities are Sri Rama, Lakshmana and Hanuman. One significance for this kavu is that it has two holy places called Mele Kavu and Thazhe kavu.

The Thaze Kavu is a sacred grove which harbors several rare plants species typical of the Myristica swamps, notably Syzygium travancoricum, an endangered endemic plant. Much of the flora of the sacred grove has been lost due to poor regeneration and the disturbance from cattle and human activity in this thickly populated area.

The annual festival is a wonderful visualisation of devotional unity of a place where people still follow very old and sacred customs throughout the season. Its the time the village gets themselves into a feeling in which they becomes part of and enjoy the happiness of being part of the glory of Lord Rama. Its the festival where it pictures the great culture merging the normal and common life with great old mythologies. Once the festival starts @ the temple , all residents of Dharmadam - Andalur become vegetarian .People used to greet the visitors and guests with puffed rice (Aval) and bananas.
