Sree Sundareswara Temple,Talap Kannur

 Sree Sundareswara Temple,Talap Kannur

Sree Sundareswara Temple is located 2 kilometres away from Kannur town. In 1916, Sree Narayana Guru, the great social reformer of Kerala, founded this temple. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this temple is one of the four temples consecrated by the Guru in Kannur district. Here, Lord Shiva is worshipped in the form of Sundareswara (God of Beauty). The temple is open to all irrespective of their caste or religion.

The eight-day annual festival of the temple is celebrated in the months of April- May. Many religious and cultural programs add colour to the festival. On the last day the Arattu (Holy Bath) ritual is held. It is followed by procession of caparisoned elephants and fireworks, which mark the end of the festival.

Pakistan Peedika , Kuthuparamb

Pakistan Peedika , Kuthuparamb

A hillock in Kerala's Kannur district is called Kargil and the reason why the people have christened the hill Kargil is because just a stone’s throw away there lies a Pakistan too.
"When downhill there is a Pakistan, we felt the need to name this hill as Kargil, especially after the 1999 Kargil battle between the two countries. We have now made a bus stand which is dedicated to all jawans who died in the 1999 Indo-Pak war," a resident of Kargil, P Narayanan said.
Though, not in any government record, this village has been known locally as Pakistan for the past three decades.
Locals say the village owes its name to a former Indian soldier, Salim who had settled in this village after the 1971 Indo-Pak war and opened a shop, which he called Pakistan peedika (shop).
Salim died 20 years ago and the shop was sold off but its name was soon adopted by the entire village and the villagers say its for a good cause.
"It's funny that there is a Pakistan in India but we hope this will in some way better Indo-Pak relations. So, we still have this placed name Pakistan," Vice-President, Chittariparmabu Panchayat, K Raju said.
The village may never be officially named Pakistan but the villagers say they don’t mind the name as long as it remains a symbol of peace.

Odathilpalli Thalassery

Odathilpalli Thalassery

In the heart of Thalassery stands the 200-year-old Odathil Palli and the Garden Mosque. The site of the Odathil Palli used to be a sugarcane garden of the Dutch. It changed hands to the British-owned East India Company .

Moosakaka, a Muslim Keralite, was the contractor of the East India Company. Moosakaka hailed from the Keyi Family of Thalassery. The Keyis were among the prominent traders of the time.

An unusual structure with Hindu-Buddhist style copper roofing, the 270-year-old shrine follows a mix of Hindu and Muslim architecture. It has neither a central dome nor minarets, instead there is a roof covered in copper sheets and wooden walls and pillars with intricate carvings. The mosque was built on a piece of land in the heart of Thalassery, donated by the rulers to a rich Arab merchant. Chowakkaran Moosa, a local trader of Thalassery, one of the earliest to source and supply spices from Malabar to the British, was later made in charge of the upkeep of Odathil Palli, counted among the oldest surviving mosques in Thalassery.

Moosa constructed a beautiful mosque in Thalassery in the 'Karimbin-odam' (sugarcane plantation) formerly belonged to the Dutch, occupied by the British. Odam means 'garden' in Dutch. Since it was constructed in Odam the mosque came to be called Odathil Palli, meaning 'mosque in Odam'. The mosque had copper plate roofing and golden dome in the minor and share the scenic features as the ones noted in the Brahmonical Tradition. There was opposition in laying the dome — a privilege enjoyed by the temples — so Zamorin gave speed permission to lay the domes and the Minaret. It highlights the communal harmony that prevailed in those days and the policy of enlightened toleration followed by the Kerala rulers. All Muslims can offer prayers. In the Kabaristan (graveyard adjacent to the mosque) only the dead bodies of the Keyis, their wives and children are buried.

It is also known as the Garden Mosque .Odathil Palli is a destination that tourists and travelers come to see. The highlights of Odathil Palli are that it has the typical Kerala architecture, and it is in the heart of Tellicherry. The crown on the roof is made of gold. The mosque is still in use for worship today.

Makreri Subramanya Temple

Makreri Subramanya Temple

Makreri Subramanya Temple is the only temple in Kerala where the main thanthri (Pujari) is Hanuman. Hanuman, in Thretha Yugam, has installed the main deity and He still does all the Pujas. Hence the power of this temple is unimaginable, though it is in the interiors and known to lesser number of people.

This temple is situated in a place called Makreri (short form of Markkadasseri) near Thalassery . Even though this place is in a remote location from the main town, the temple has been determined by experts to be thousands of years old.

The temple consists of two structures, where the same deities are installed. The main deity here is the Valli Parinaya Subramaniyan (Marriage of Subramaniyan and Valli). This deity was installed by the Supreme among the Markkadas (monkey), Hanuman and hence this place is called Markkadasseri and later known as Makreri. It is still believed that Hanuman does all the Pujas and there is a vigraham (idol) of Hanuman in the main Thanthri’s (pujari’s) position. The temple thanthri (pujari) is considered as a helper to the main thanthri and he, after asking the permission of Hanuman, does all the pujas.

Very few people know the story behind this temple, even though it is clearly documented in the Ramayana.

Since the main thanthri is Hanuman who himself is a punya athma, the prathishta got uncontrollable power. In order to control this power as well as to give daily darshan to parama bhakta hanuman, Sri Rama took His original form of Maha Vishnu sand installed himself on the three sides of the temple.

The only God who still lives on this mother earth is Hanuman .......!
