Munderikadavu Bird Sanctuary, Kannur

 Munderi river and bank is the main source of food and shelter of the birds and other organisms in the Munderi Kadavu Bird Sanctuary. It is the first bird sanctuary in the kannur district and the fourth one in the kerala state.We can see thousands of birds and reptile.70 percentage of birds are migrating birds from the different region of world.   




Around one lakh birds including 60 migratory bird species flock to these wetlands every year, according to bird-watchers. Eurasian wigeon, black-headed bunting and red-headed bunting are some of the regular visitors.
Also, 12 endangered species of eagles are seen only in these wetlands.The wetland covering an area of around 1,000 acres attracts bird-watchers from far off places as hundreds of birds flock here during various seasons. Birds from Siberia are also seen here.



The Kattampally wetland is among the 24 Important Bird Areas (IBA) in the state identified by the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS). As many as seven globally threatened species of birds have been sighted in this area. The Birdlife International has also said that it should be considered a priority site for conservation.




It is is an ornithologist’s paradise , a favourite haunt of migratory birds, important for rich variety of plants, mangroves and fish.
