Parassinkkadavu Snake Park

Parassinkkadavu Snake Park

The Parassinikadavu Snake Park is one of the major attractions of Kannur District itself.  The Snake Park, which is a subsidiary unit of the Pappinisseri VishachikitsaSociety, is the only one of its kind in the State and perhaps the whole of India.  The park is dedicated to the preservation and conservation of snakes, most of which are becoming extinct gradually. There is a large collection of poisonous and non-poisonous snakes. There are three snake pits, fifteen glass cases for snakes and two large glass houses for King Cobras in the park. Other than the snakes, there are other kinds of rare animals, reptiles and birds like the endangered species of Simhavalan Monkeys and Crocodiles.

The most famous ones being the King Cobra, Russel’s viper, Krait, Python, and many others. The centre has a venom-extracting laboratory and treats snake bite victims round the year. There are demonstrations at the centre to educate the public and tourists about snakes and to take away popular superstitions about them.

Parassinkkadavu Snake Park is about 16 kilometres (9.9 mi) from Kannur town in the Kannur district of north Kerala, in south India. The Snake Park is in Parassinikkadavu, which is 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) from National Highway (NH) 17, en route from Kannur to Taliparamba.

It has also been proposed that a laboratory to extract venom from snakes for purposes of research be set up here. The Snake Park, set up by the Visha Chikista Kendra, is regularly visited by both foreign and domestic tourists. The Kendra also offers effective treatment for snake bites.

Football Friend Free Coaching Centre Kannur

Football Friend Free Coaching Centre Kannu

Though cricket has become the religion of the young sports freaks, the 34-year-old Football Friend Free Coaching Centre (FFFCC) here is still confident that no game can replace the spirit of football from the hearts of the people, especially those in Malabar.Founded on May 14, 1978, to commemorate the International Year of the Children, the centre would get a building of its own very soon.

Many veteran football players from the district who dedicated their lives to the game such as N.T. Karunakaran, Lakhsmanan, K. Balachandran, Raghuthaman and Syed, to name a few, give their voice in the programme to lend a sense of nostalgia about the football legacy of the district.
The FFFCC, which completed 10,000 days of football coaching in December last, gets special attention in the serial.
Started 28 years ago as a modest initiative to give football coaching to young players, the FFFCC still survives against odds.
The goodwill the FFFCC has earned over the years has as much to do with the football tradition of the district as to the former players K. Kunhiraman and N.T. Karunakaran, who took the initiative to start it.

The Football Friend Free Coaching Centre (FFFCC) here Kannur, the only such institution in the country, will give free coaching in football to children below 12 years of age. ........... !

Kannur Lighthouse

Kannur Lighthouse  is located near the Payyamabalam Beach  a few kilometers from Kannur Town , in Kerala state, South India . It is adjacent to the Sea View Park and the Government Guest House. The lighthouse is still active and overlooks the Arabian sea .
Cannanore is the old English name for the town named Kannur. The lighthouse at Kannur is still often referred to as the Cannanore Lighthouse.

History

In order to warn ships at sea of land, a system of hoisting a lantern with an oil wick lamp was introduced in 1843 by the British. A masonry pedestal was constructed in 1903 on the rampart of the fort and a double wick oil lamp inside the 4th order dioptric lens and lantern with arrangement for occultation was placed on this pedestal. The light was made available during fair seasons only, from September to May every year.

In 1924, some enhancements were made. The light was shifted in 1939 on to a 16 metre steel trestle erected on the northern bastion of the Fort. The steel trestle can still be seen today at the Fort.

The equipment was replaced by a flashing light with 10 second character running on DA gas in 1948. This light remained in operation till the new lighthouse tower was constructed at the present location during 1975-76.

Lighthouse today

Today, the light uses modern PRB-42 equipment with 6 volt, 30 watt Type 'C' sealed beam lamps, supplied by Messers J. Stone India, of Calcutta. The GI lantern house installed at the station is 2.4 meters in diameter and was fabricated at Cochin. The new lighthouse was commissioned into service on 25 July 1976.
On 31 May 2003, the 'C' type sealed beam lamps were replaced by 'D' type sealed beam lamps. Today the lighthouse lights up the skies every night, and offers a solitary light that can be seen from the Baby beach and as far as Payyambalam .

CHERUKUNNU ANNAPORNESHWARI TEMPLE

Cherukunnu Annapoorneshwari Temple, also known as Cherukunnilamma Temple, is the only Durga temple in Kerala where Parvathi Devi Mahamaya is in ‘Annapoorna Bhavam’ (Mother of all meals). ‘Annam’ in Malayalam language means ‘food’ and ‘Poornam’ (purnam) means full. The meaning of the Bhavam Annapurna is one who gives food to every needy without restriction. The idol is with a ladle in one hand. Annapurna is the goddess with a golden ladle. Sree Annapoorneshwari Temple is situated in Cherukunnu, 15 km from Taliparamaba, in Kannur district of Kerala, India.

Annapoorneswari

As the name Annapoorna indicates, Annadhanam (free food distribution) is a very important offering to the goddess. The food, rice with at least one gravy curry is given to the devotees as the prasaadams. This temple gives food to all devotees who come here for worship and want to take food. Food is offered two times, during lunch and dinner every day. How the name Cherukunnu came into being

Cheru means small or little and kunnu means hill that is small hill. Around this place there are five small hills. Hence the place got the name Cherukunnu. The word 'Chorukunnu' later changed into 'Cherukunnu'.

This temple carries historic importance. The legend is that Rama and Laxmana on their way to Srilanka halted at this temple and sought the blessings of the deity to rescue Sita from the captivity of Ravana.Bronze and copper idols of snakes spotted everywhere in the temple. It is believed that it was here that Lord Rama along with Lakshmana halted on their way to free Sita from Ravana in Lanka. The temple also has a shrine for the serpent God and has a number of bronze and copper idols of snakes. The annual festival of the temple is celebrated for eight days. Kathakali, Chakyarkoothu, Ottanthullal, Parayan Thullal and Seethankan Thullal are the main art-forms performed during the festival.
